Сингапур, Республика Сингапур Государство в Юго-Восточной Азии, на о. Сингапур и прилегающих мелких островах, у южной оконечности полуострова Малакка. 639 кв. км. Население 2.88 млн. человек (1993), главным образом китайцы (3/4), малайцы, выходцы из Индии, Пакистана, Бангладеш, европейцы. Официальные языки – малайский, китайский, тамильский, английский. Верующие – приверженцы буддизма, конфуцианства, ислама, индуизма, христианства. Столица – г. Сингапур. Входит в Содружество. Глава государства – президент. Законодательный орган – парламент. До 1819 остров принадлежал малайскому султану Джохору. В 1826-1946 Сингапур – английская колония в составе Стрейтс-Сетлментс. На острове была сооружена крупная английская военно-морская база (передана Сингапуру в 60-х гг.). В 1942-45 под японской оккупацией. В 1959 Сингапур добился самоуправления. В 1963-65 в составе Малайзии. С 1965 суверенная республика.
